The Public Service Pension Investment Board (PSPIB) released its annual report, examining the pension fund’s performance as of March 31, 2014. It concluded that the pension plan for federal government employees posted strong returns of 16.3% for the last fiscal year. These results were much better than the benchmark policy portfolio return of 13.9 %.

The Conservative government has just finished a consultation process about their proposal to change the federal Pension Benefits Standards Act to include target benefit pension plans. They’re enthusiastic about this type of pension plan which is a good reason to pay attention.

The Conservative federal government has launched an unprecedented attack on the retirement security of all Canadians. Their proposal is to push target benefit pension plans on federally-regulated workers that have defined benefit plans.

The CD Howe Institute releases a virtually identical study every year, peddling the same misconceptions about federal pensions and public sector compensation. Federal public sector employees work hard for and make significant contributions to their pension plan – more than 10 cents on each dollar earned.

But we also need to plan to ensure our family's financial security in a situation we can't always predict –– death. Currently, only 11 per cent of the Superannuation death benefit has been applied for, a number that APSAR Prairies Regional Vice-President Frank McGregor finds unsettling.
